A short history of Reading

Reading's earliest known name, Readingas, dates from the 8th century and probably refers to an Anglo-Saxon tribe called Reada's People. The settlement developed where people crossed the River Kennet. A Danish army camped there in late 870 and the first Battle of Reading was fought on 4 January 871. Domesday Book describes Reading as a borough and records six mills, four on royal land and two on Battle Abbey's estate. Henry I founded Reading Abbey in 1121 and the town became a place of pilgrimage. The Merchant Guild obtained a charter in 1253. Reading was the biggest town in Berkshire by 1525 and the abbey was largely destroyed in 1538. A Royalist garrison arrived in 1642 and Parliamentary forces took the town in 1643. The second Battle of Reading took place during the Glorious Revolution. The Great Western Railway arrived in 1841. Reading Abbey Ruins, Abbey Gate, Greyfriars Church, the Church of St Laurence and the Church of St Mary are Grade I listed.
