Hoo takes its name from a Saxon word thought to mean a spur of land. Werburgh, daughter of King Wulfhere of Mercia, was born between 640 and 650. A monastery probably stood nearby early on and the first church may date from the 8th century under King Æthelbald of Mercia. Hoo and land at Hoo All Hallows were probably placed under Medeshamstede, now Peterborough. Hoo appears in Domesday Book, which also records the hundred of Hoo. Broad Street was written Brodestrete in 1478 and Jacobs Lane recalls the family of Stephen Jacobe of Hoo in 1480. The church holds royal hatchments of Elizabeth I and James I. Ferdinando Booth was vicar from 1675 to 1680. A branch railway to the Chattenden and Upnor line closed in the 1890s and a workhouse stayed in use until the 1930s. Five listed buildings stand near the centre, including the Grade I Church of St Werburgh.
