A short history of Woodley

Woodley takes its name from Old English words for a woodland clearing and once lay within the old parish of Sonning. It does not appear in the Domesday Book of 1086. The name is first recorded in the Register of Saint Osmund, which mentions Osbertus de Woodleghe holding a dwelling and yard and pasturing his pigs in the manorial woods. The modern spelling first appears in the 1550 Survey of Sonning. Bulmershe Court was built in 1777 by James Wheble and Henry Addington lived there each summer from 1790 to 1801. Lands in Woodley were enclosed in 1820. By 1847 it was a scattered farming village and it stayed that way until Woodley Aerodrome opened in 1929. Douglas Bader lost both legs in a crash on the airfield in 1931. Of ten listed buildings nearby, the Church of St. John the Evangelist and Bulmershe Manor are Grade II*.
