A short history of Grays

Archaeological evidence points to human settlement around Grays from the Palaeolithic onwards. In 1086 Domesday Book listed seven manors at a place called Thurrock, two in Barstable hundred and five in Chafford hundred. William Peverel held the one that became Grays Thurrock. The name Thurrock is thought to refer to marshy ground beside the Thames. By 1190 the manor was tenanted by Isaac, son of Josce the Rabbi. The crown seized it in 1194 then granted it to Henry de Grey in 1195 and his family kept it until the 16th century. A church existed by the late 12th century. Samuel Pepys visited in 1665. The church was mostly rebuilt in 1846 and the railway station opened in 1854. In 2019 thirty-nine bodies were found in a lorry on Eastern Avenue. Eight listed buildings stand near the centre. State Cinema and the Church of St Mary the Virgin are Grade II*.
