The Domesday Book of 1086 records Alvithelea, Alvileia and Alvilea, meaning the woodland clearing of a woman called Ælfgȳth. St Michael's Church, Grade I listed, dates from the 12th century. Courts Farm is centred on half of a manor house of the 13th century that has a timber frame. A 14th century brass in the church commemorates Radulphus de Knevynton and the name appeared as Alvythele in 1418. In the 19th century the church was declared unsafe but parishioners raised £1,000 to save it. Long a parish in the Hundred of Chafford, Aveley joined Orsett Rural District in 1894 and Thurrock in 1936. London overspill brought rapid growth after the Second World War. In 1964 John Hesketh came across mammoth remains in a Sandy Lane clay pit.
