A short history of Bradley Stoke
Bradley Stoke is named after the Bradley Brook and the Stoke Brook, streams in the locality. The land was once farmland north of Stoke Gifford, shared between the parishes of Stoke Gifford, Almondsbury, Patchway and Winterbourne. Bailey's Court and Watch Elm Farm stood in the south while Bowsland Farm and Manor Farm lay to the north and Webb's Farm sat in the middle. Watch Elm Farm took its name from the Watch Elm, a tree of exceptional size that fell in the mid 18th century. Planning began in the late 1970s and construction started in 1987, creating the biggest new town in Europe funded by private money. Residents had wanted their own town council from 1987. A national recession and high interest rates in the early 1990s damaged the local property market and left many homeowners in negative equity, which brought the nickname 'Sadly Broke'. A town council was approved in principle in 1991 and took charge on 1 April 1992. Baileys Court Farmhouse is the sole survivor of the earlier buildings.
