A short history of South Ockendon
South Ockendon already existed as a village when the Normans arrived and a priest is recorded there in 1085. The Domesday Book of 1086 lists it as Wocheduna. The name is conjecturally linked to a Saxon chief called Wocca. The village centred on its green, where the Norman church of St Nicholas of Myra stands beside the Royal Oak, a tavern from the 14th century with a 17th century extension. In 1912 Mollands Farm was bought so that people with learning disabilities could work there and it grew into South Ockendon Hospital. Prefabricated houses for bombed out residents of East London and West Essex arrived in the late 1940s and were mostly replaced by the Flowers' Estate in the late 1960s. The hospital closed in 1994 and its site became the Brandon Groves Estate. Of five listed buildings near the centre, Little Belhus and its garden walls and gateway are Grade II*.
