A short history of Yate

A religious house recorded around AD 770 is the earliest mention of Yate. The Domesday Book entry for the place dates from 1086. The name comes from an Old English word for an entrance to a forest area. Much of the surrounding land stayed wooded into medieval times before being cleared for farming. The parish church of St Mary was built in the Norman period and altered in the 15th century. Yate was set on its course in 1844 when its station opened, with markets and businesses gathering around Station Road. Major growth began in the early 1920s with the Moorland Road estates near the Parnall aeroplane factory and the Ridge estate followed in the 1950s. In the 1960s Yate was designated a development area. St Mary's received a thorough restoration in 1970 and North Yate was added in the 1990s and 2000s. Of 41 listed buildings near the centre the church is the only Grade I while the other 40 are Grade II.
