A short history of Bourne End
Bourne End takes its name from the mouth of the River Wye, bourne being an old word for river and the first hamlet stood half a mile downstream of the present centre. Morden's 1722 map of Buckinghamshire shows it as "Born end". In the early nineteenth century it was one of several hamlets in Wooburn parish. The Wycombe Railway Company emerged in 1846 and by 1854 Isambard Kingdom Brunel had planned and built a railway through the settlement linking Maidenhead with High Wycombe, which brought growth. An altered form, "Bone End", had spread onto official maps before the vicar of Wooburn reversed it in 1858. The neighbouring hamlets merged with Bourne End, as did Well End and Coldmoorholme. Enid Blyton, Edgar Wallace and Louis Blériot lived there in the 1920s. The Royalty Cinema opened in 1934 and the line towards High Wycombe closed in 1970. Fifteen listed buildings stand near the centre, fourteen of them Grade II and Cores End Cottage Cores End House at Grade II*.
Sport and leisure
Upper Thames Sailing Club is listed as a sports centre for sailing and Bourne End Marina is also in the area. Tennis courts are mapped in a number of places with provision for soccer as well. The recreation ground is the named open space and several children's playgrounds are mapped around the town.
