A short history of Malmesbury
Malmesbury began as an Iron Age fort. An Irishman named Maildubh founded an abbey there in 675 and the town's name combines his with burh, meaning fortification. Alfred the Great made it a defended burh against Viking attack and Æthelstan was buried in the abbey in 939. In 1010 the monk Eilmer flew a hang glider from a tower. The Domesday Book of 1086 records Malmesbury as a borough in the Hundred of Cicementone and lists it first in the Wiltshire section. Roger of Salisbury seized the monastery in 1118 and rebuilt the town walls in stone. The town changed hands seven times in the Civil War and Parliament ordered its walls destroyed in 1646. It now has 315 listed buildings including six at Grade I such as the Abbey Church of St Mary and St Aldhelm and The Old Bell Hotel.
