A short history of Southend-on-Sea
The earliest record of the place dates from 1309, when it appeared as Stratende, a modest parcel of land within the Manor of Milton in the parish of Prittlewell. A will of 1408 called it Sowthende. In 1665 the naval ship London exploded at its mooring just off the settlement. Until the mid-18th century the hamlet consisted of fishermen's huts and Thames Farm, then a large house built in 1758 had become the Ship Inn by 1764. In 1790 Daniel Scratton reserved 35 acres on the clifftop west of the original settlement for New South-End. The older part became known as Old South-end. The Grand Hotel opened in 1793 but developer bankruptcies in 1795 left much of the new land open. Princess Caroline of Brunswick stayed at The Terrace in 1803. Within 2.1 miles of the centre are 138 listed buildings and six of them are Grade I, including Prittlewell Priory and Southchurch Hall.
