A short history of Brentwood

A Bronze Age axe and an entrenched camp in Weald Country Park suggest early activity, though Saxons are thought to be the first settlers. The name is Old English for burnt wood and appeared in Latin as Bosco Arso around 1176. The town grew at a crossroads on the Roman road. A chapel of ease to Thomas Becket was built around 1221 and a market charter came in 1227. The White Hart inn dates mainly from about 1480. The Protestant martyr William Hunter was put to death by burning in the town in 1555 and Brentwood School was founded in 1557. Coaching traffic left the town with 11 inns by 1788. The railway arrived in 1840 and the Roman Catholic church on Ingrave Road became a cathedral in 1917. There are 80 listed buildings, eight of them Grade II* including the White Hart Inn.
