A short history of South Woodham Ferrers
Until a railway station opened in 1889, the land where South Woodham Ferrers now stands was sparsely populated farmland. The station was first named "Woodham Ferris" and served the village of Woodham Ferrers, which sits on a hill a mile to the north. The settlement grew slowly around the station and some farmland was split into plots that were sold to private buyers and to developers. In 1974 Essex County Council agreed a masterplan for a major expansion, bringing large housing estates, further facilities and a new town centre. Until 1 April 1987 the area formed part of the parish of Woodham Ferrers, after which it had a parish of its own. Many streets in the southwestern part of the town take their names from the writings of J. R. R. Tolkien. Two Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre: Champions Hall and Tabrums.
