A short history of Abingdon-on-Thames
Settlement at Abingdon reaches back to the Neolithic, when a causewayed enclosure was built there. People lived in the area from the early to middle Iron Age onwards and a late Iron Age defensive enclosure stayed in use through the Roman period. At Barton Court Farm, excavations have uncovered a Roman villa and the farm buildings of a later Saxon settlement. A Saxon abbey was set up at Abingdon, perhaps around 676 and the town took its name from it, the name probably meaning the hill of a person called Æbba or Æbbe. In 1084 William the Conqueror spent Easter at the abbey. Wool and cloth made the town prosperous in the 13th and 14th centuries and in 1337 a riot over the abbot's hold on the market left several monks dead. After the abbey was dissolved in 1538 the town declined until Mary I granted a borough charter in 1556. The County Hall was built between 1678 and 1682. Abingdon Lock followed in 1790, then the Wilts & Berks Canal in 1810 and the railway branch in 1856. Of 276 listed buildings nearby, 9 are Grade I, including Abbey Gate, the Church of St Helen and the Long Alley Almshouses.
