A short history of Ingatestone
In Saxon times Ingatestone lay on the Essex Great Road between London and Colchester. From about 950 AD it belonged to Barking Abbey. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Inga in the Hundred of Chelmsford, among the lands of St Mary of Barking, valued at 60 shillings and held directly by Robert Gernon. The name appears as Gynges atte Ston in 1283 and Inge atte Stone in 1433. Edward I granted a charter on 5 November 1289 permitting Saturday markets and a yearly fair on 29 August. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries Sir William Petre bought the village from the Crown and built Ingatestone Hall and almshouses in Stock Lane. By the 18th century it was a coaching centre until the railway reduced its importance. It merged with Fryerning in 1889. Of 42 listed buildings the Church of St Edmund and St Mary is Grade I and 98 High Street is Grade II*.
