A short history of Cheshunt
Cheshunt lies near the line of the Roman road Ermine Street and its name combines an element meaning fort or camp with a second element of uncertain sense, possibly connected with hunting or with a spring. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Cestrehunt, a manor in the Hertford Hundred held by Alan Rufus, having belonged to Edeva the Fair before the Conquest. It listed 78 households, a mill, extensive woodland and a priest. St Mary's Church was built between 1418 and 1448 and a Benedictine nunnery stood here from the late 12th century until the 1530s. Theobalds became a separate manor by 1441 and William Cecil acquired it in 1564 and rebuilt the house as Theobalds Palace. James I died there in 1625. Cheshunt Great House passed to Cardinal Thomas Wolsey in 1519. The area has 65 listed buildings, with the Church of St Mary at Grade I.
