A short history of Princes Risborough

The name Risborough comes from Old English words for hills covered in brushwood. Before 1066 the manor's land paid £10 by unweighed count, with a burgess of Oxford paying 2s and a saltboiler of Droitwich also contributing. By the Domesday Book survey of 1086 Risborough was a royal manor with a stud farm, a deer park and a large fishery, in a hundred shared with Bledlow, Horsenden and Monks Risborough. In the 13th century it was Magna Risberge, which set it apart from Parva Risberge, now Monks Risborough. The Earls of Cornwall held the manor from 1242 to 1336, so it became Earls Risborough. Later, after Edward the Black Prince died, the name changed to Prince Risberge and then Princes Risborough, because various Princes held the manor during the Wars of the Roses in the 15th century. Near the centre stand 46 listed buildings, among them the Grade II* Manor House, Church of St Mary and Market House.
