A short history of Thame

Thame dates from the Anglo-Saxon period and is named after the River Thame. Thame Abbey was founded for the Cistercian Order in 1138 and its church was consecrated in 1145. The Prebendal House existed by 1234 and its chapel followed around 1250. In the early 1290s the prebendal houses and St Mary's church were repeatedly attacked during a conflict between Oliver Sutton the bishop of Lincoln and Sir John St. John. The abbey was suppressed in the 16th century and Thame Park was built on its site. John Williams built almshouses in 1550 and on his death in 1559 his will established the grammar school. Royalists and Parliamentarians occupied the town in the 1640s and John Hampden died there in 1643. Around the centre are 162 listed buildings, two of them Grade I: the Church of St Mary and the chapel near the Prebendal.
