In 1209 the hanging of two scholars led some academics to leave and found Cambridge. The St Scholastica Day Riot of 1355 killed around 93 people. The monasteries closed in the 1530s and city status followed in 1542 when Christ Church chapel became a cathedral. Latimer and Ridley were burned in 1555 and Cranmer was executed in 1556. Charles I held his court here from 1642 to 1646. Industry grew from the 19th century and William Morris opened a car plant at Cowley in 1910. The centre has 1109 listed buildings with 198 at Grade I, including parts of Queen's College and Magdalen College.
