A short history of Wendover
Wendover appears as Wændofron in the will of Ælfheah, ealdorman of Hampshire, from between 965 and 971. The name probably has Brythonic Celtic roots and may mean white water. Edward the Confessor held the 24 hide manor before the Norman Conquest. By 1086 it was called Wendovre, in the hundred of Aylesbury, with William the Conqueror as tenant in chief. The settlement seems to have stood near St Mary's church until the focus probably moved north after the 1214 market charter. Wendover was a borough by 1228. Both sides reportedly looted the town during the Civil War and many central buildings date from the 17th century. A turnpike trust began in 1721 and the Wendover Arm canal was built between 1793 and 1797. Robert Louis Stevenson spent a night at The Red Lion in 1874. There are 83 listed buildings, with The Red House and Bank Farmhouse at Grade II*.
