A short history of Harlow

Harlow has an Old English name of uncertain meaning. Objects from the Neolithic and Bronze Age have been found locally and settlement is much more firmly shown from the late Iron Age onwards. A small Roman town stood here, with a temple built around 80 AD at Stanegrove Hill. A church is known on the site of the present parish church around 1044. The Domesday Book of 1086 lists four manors at Herlaua, the largest owned by Bury St Edmunds Abbey and later recorded as Harlowbury. The chapel there dates from around 1180. In 1218 the abbots secured a market charter. The market lapsed between 1592 and 1600 and was revived in the early 19th century. The railway opened in 1841 and the market closed again in 1850. Harlow became a new town on 25 March 1947 under a masterplan by Frederick Gibberd. The area has 129 listed buildings, including two Grade I churches: St Andrew and St Mary the Virgin.
