A short history of Hertford

Hertford takes its name from a ford where harts, meaning mature stags, were found and its earliest known mention is as Herutford in a work completed in 731. In 913 Edward the Elder ordered two earthwork fortifications to be built facing each other across the River Lea crossing during his campaign against the Danes. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the town as Hertforde, with two churches, two markets, three mills and burgesses. The Normans began Hertford Castle and Ralph de Limesy founded Hertford Priory. Henry II rebuilt the castle in stone and in 1216 Prince Louis of France captured it after 25 days. Queen Isabella died there in 1358. The priory was dissolved in 1536 and Parliament met at the castle in 1563 because of plague in London. Samuel Stone was born in Fore Street in 1602 and renamed Hartford in Connecticut in 1637. The Lea Navigation Canal followed in 1767 and the railway in 1843. The area has 286 listed buildings, with Grade I status for the Church of St Leonard, the Gatehouse to Hertford Castle, Shire Hall and the Hertford Quaker Meeting House.
