A short history of Harpenden
Belgic farmers lived in the area before the Romans and a Romano-Celtic sarcophagus near the river Lea held objects from around 150 AD. The name probably comes from an Old English term for harp valley. Edward the Confessor granted the Wheathampstead manor to Westminster Abbey in 1060 and the abbey's gradual clearing of woodland led to the village. St Nicholas began as a chapel of ease in 1217 and a parish church is first mentioned in 1221. Part of the Second Battle of St Albans was fought on Nomansland Common. John Bennet Lawes inherited Rothamsted in 1834 and built laboratories there in the 1850s. Railways arrived from 1860 and farms were sold for housing after 1880. Of 44 listed buildings, four are Grade II*: Moat House Hotel, Bowers House, St Nicholas and Harpenden Hall.
