A short history of Witham
Excavations have found Neolithic occupation at Witham and a Roman temple with a pottery kiln beside the road from Colchester to London. In 913 Edward the Elder camped here on his way to Maldon. The name is recorded as Witham in that year and in the Domesday Book of 1086, which mentions no church although one is thought to have existed. The Saxon settlement centred on Chipping Hill. St Nicolas church was largely rebuilt around 1330. Sir John Southcott bought the manor around 1575 and his family's lands were destroyed in 1648.
