A short history of Dunstable

Romans settled the area by the AD 40s and 50s, paving Watling Street and the Icknield Way and the settlement probably took the name Durocobrivis. Saxons occupied it around AD 571. Several theories explain the modern name, including a boundary post belonging to Duna and a hill with a marketplace. By 1066 the surrounding land was uncultivated and wooded. From 1109 Henry I had areas cleared and promised settlers his goodwill. A royal residence followed in 1123 and he founded Dunstable Priory in 1131, the year a town charter was granted. In 1290 an Eleanor cross was raised for Eleanor of Castile. Charles I's soldiers plundered the town in June 1644 and the cross was destroyed. Of 53 listed buildings near the centre the Priory Gateway with its attached walls and the Priory Church of St Peter are Grade I.
