A short history of Wivenhoe

The name Wivenhoe is Saxon, built from a personal name and a word for a spur of land, though a folk tale ties it to a wyvern. The Domesday Book of 1086 records it as Wiivnhou in the Lexden hundred, held by Robert Gernon, with a mill, 12 acres of meadow and grazing for 60 sheep. A church dedicated to St Mary the Virgin stood in the High Street by 1254 when Simon Battle was patron. Its aisles of 1340 and 1350 make it the town's oldest surviving building. Elizabeth de Vere, who died in 1537, left ornaments and vestments from her own chapel to the church and the tower received plaster in 1563. Wivenhoe served as a port for Colchester with two shipyards and the railway arrived in 1863. An earthquake in 1884 damaged the town badly. A dry dock was finished in 1889 then extended in 1904 before being pulled down in the mid-1960s. Eight Grade II listed buildings stand near the centre.
