A short history of Colchester

Flint tools show people living in the Colne Valley long before the Romans. Between 20 and 10 BC the Celtic name Camulodunon appeared on coins minted by Tasciovanus and the settlement later became a centre of power for Cunobelin. After the Roman conquest in AD 43 a legionary fortress was established there and around AD 49 it became a colonia with a Temple of the Divine Claudius. Boudica's rebellion destroyed it in AD 61 and the town walls followed between about AD 65 and 80. The name Colchester appears first as Colenceaster and Colneceastre in the 10th century. Colchester Castle was built in the eleventh century on Roman foundations. The area has 415 listed buildings including Grade I examples such as the Roman Town Wall, Winnock's Almshouses, Red Lion Hotel and the ruins of the Priory Church of St Botolph.
