A short history of Buntingford
Buntingford probably takes its name from Bunta, a Saxon chieftain or tribe, together with a ford over the River Rib. The bird plays no part. The forms Buntas Ford and Buntingeford date from 1185, the year a Knights Templar land document first records the place. In 1253 Henry III granted it a royal charter as a market town and the modern spelling appears from 1255. In 1360 Elizabeth de Burgh, Countess of Ulster, moved her market from Chipping to Buntingford with the permission of Edward III then handed it to the townspeople, so it became among the earliest community owned markets in England. Lying on the Roman road Ermine Street, the town developed as a coach stopping point with numerous inns and gained an 18th-century prison called The Cage. Queen Elizabeth I is said to have stayed in the building now known as the Bell House Gallery. Of 91 listed buildings near the centre, the Church of St Peter is Grade I, while Victoria House, The Almhouses and 66 High Street are Grade II*.
