A short history of Bletchley

Just south of Fenny Stratford, the Romano-British town of Magiovinium lay on sides of Watling Street. The name Bletchley has Anglo-Saxon origins and refers to a clearing belonging to Blæcca. It appears in the 12th century as Bicchelai. Bletchley began as a minor village near Fenny Stratford, which declined from the Civil War onwards. The railway station opened in 1838 and branches to Bedford and Buckingham followed in 1846 and 1850. By 1884 the settlement was small, gathered around the parish church at Old Bletchley. Brick-making began around 1897 and Bletchley joined the Fenny Stratford urban district in 1898. In the Second World War Bletchley Park housed the Government Code and Cypher School and Wilton Hall was built in 1943. From 1952 London boroughs sent people and businesses and in 1967 Milton Keynes was designated. The area has 66 listed buildings, including the Grade I Church of St Mary.
