A short history of Ledbury

Ledbury dates to around AD 690 and appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Liedeberge. The name may come from the River Leadon with the Old English word burg added. The town was probably created on a bishop's manor between 1121 and 1127 under Bishop Richard de Capella. St Katherine's Hospital was founded around 1231 and the town sent members to Parliament under Edward I. Under Elizabeth I it prospered thanks mainly to the clothier merchant families Skynner, Skyppe and Elton. The Market House was built in 1617. In April 1645 Royalist forces under Prince Rupert defeated Parliamentarian troops led by Colonel Edward Massey at Ledbury, where Massey lost 520 men. Anthony Keck built Underdown in Ledbury Park around 1780. Of 199 listed buildings near the centre, the Market House, the Church of St Michael and All Angels and Ledbury Park are Grade I.
