A short history of Ipswich
Ipswich took shape around its port in Anglo-Saxon times with imported wares dating to the rule of Rædwald of the East Angles (616 to 624). Around 700 Frisian potters settled and about 720 a large new area was laid out near the Buttermarket. Viking rule followed the invasion of 869 and earth ramparts were probably raised around 900. A mint operated under King Edgar in the 970s. King John granted the first charter in 1200. The port served as a Hanseatic League kontor from the 14th to 17th centuries and medieval Ipswich had five religious houses. Thomas Wolsey was born there in 1473 and founded a college in 1528. The Ipswich Martyrs were burnt on the Cornhill under Queen Mary. From 1611 to 1634 the town was a leading departure point for emigrants to New England. Of 468 listed buildings nearby 11 are Grade I, including Christchurch Mansion.
