A short history of Haverhill
Haverhill existed by Anglo-Saxon times at the latest and its name probably comes from an Old English word meaning oat hill, though goat hill has also been suggested. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the town's market. A great fire on 14 June 1667 destroyed most of the historic buildings, but one Tudor-era house survives. It is known as Anne of Cleves' House and is reported to have passed to Anne of Cleves when her marriage to Henry VIII ended. The Corn Exchange, designed by Frank Whitmore, was completed in 1889. Haverhill became an urban district in 1894. A planning review in 1956 targeted the town for expansion to resettle Londoners through new housing and factories. A review in 1962 planned a threefold rise in population. Today there are 31 listed buildings within a mile of the centre. Anne of Cleves House, the Old Independent Church and the Church of St Mary are Grade II*.
