A short history of Great Malvern

Malvern is first recorded around 1030 as Mælfern and Domesday Book gives the form Malferna for 1086. The name comes from Common Brittonic words meaning bare hill. The town grew around an 11th-century Benedictine priory and a gravestone gives 1085 for its origin. By 1135 the priory housed thirty monks. The word Great was added by 1228 to separate the place from Little Malvern. In 1290 large estates here passed to Gilbert the Red, Earl of Gloucester and disputes over hunting rights followed. Sir John Oldcastle was said to have hidden in Malvern in 1414. Henry VII and his family later made substantial endowments. After the Dissolution William Pinnocke acquired the priory church, while the other monastic buildings were taken apart, leaving the Abbey Gateway. Hydrotherapy drew visitors in the 19th century and the town absorbed neighbouring settlements. Of 186 listed buildings nearby, the Priory Church is Grade I. The Council House, the Main Building of Malvern College and the Abbey Gateway are Grade II*.
