A short history of Stratford-upon-Avon
The Roman period left a small town at Tiddington, where people lived from the first century AD until the fifth. In 781 Offa confirmed the claim of the Worcester bishops to Stratford. Vikings probably destroyed a monastery there in 1015 while the bishops kept the land until the 16th century. In 1196 Bishop John of Coutances laid out a new town on a grid about half a mile north of the original settlement and King Richard I granted a weekly market that year. A timber bridge was first mentioned in 1235. By 1252 there were about 240 burgages. The Guild of the Holy Cross had a chapel built in the 1200s and around 1417 a Guildhall and almshouses followed. Hugh Clopton paid for Clopton Bridge, which replaced the timber bridge in 1484. The guild was abolished in 1547. Grade I buildings include Harvard House and the Church of the Holy Trinity.
