A short history of Wellesbourne

The name appears in 862 as Wallesburam and the Domesday Book later gives it as Waleborne. In May 1140 a tornado, one of the earliest known in the British Isles, damaged several buildings and killed a woman. The thatched Stag's Head dates from 1640 and began operating as a pub in 1830, while Wellesbourne Hall dates from around 1700. In 1872 Joseph Arch founded the National Agricultural Labourers Union and its first meetings took place at the Stag's Head. During the Second World War the RAF opened an airfield just south of the village. Until their parishes merged in 1947 the settlement was two villages, Wellesbourne Mountford south of the River Dene and Wellesbourne Hastings north of it. A plaque commemorating the union followed in 1952. The airfield turned civilian in 1965 and 800 homes were later built on part of its site. Of 41 listed buildings near the centre the Church of St Peter, Wellesbourne Hall and The Little House are Grade II*.
