A short history of Alcester
Alcester was founded by the Romans around AD 47 as a walled fort, on Icknield Street and just north of the Fosse Way. The town that grew from the camp was possibly called Alauna. By the end of the 2nd century it was a trading and market town, with workshops for tanning, metal working and pottery and some houses had heating, painted plaster and mosaic floors. It appears to have declined in the 4th century as the Romans began to leave Britain. In the Early Middle Ages Alencestre was an Anglo-Saxon market town in the Kingdom of Mercia. Ralph le Boteler founded Alcester Abbey, a Benedictine monastery, in 1138. Its last abbot, Richard de Tutbury, resigned in 1467 and the abbey passed to Evesham Abbey. It lay in ruins by 1515 and was largely demolished under Henry VIII, with the Greville family reusing its stone at Beauchamp Court. Of 120 listed buildings near the centre, the Town Hall and Malt House are Grade I.
