Settlement in the area began in the Bronze Age and a hillfort at Hunsbury Hill dates to around 400 BC. The name first appears in writing in 914 as Ham tune, with North added later. The Danes held the town by 878 and their army there submitted to Edward the Elder in 921. Fires struck it in 1010 and 1065. Simon de Senlis probably built Northampton Castle around 1084. The Domesday Book of 1086 records Northantone with 316 houses and 2000 people. Thomas Becket was tried at the castle in 1164. Richard I granted a charter in 1189 and King John appointed a mayor in 1215. Battles were fought here in 1264 and 1460. After the Civil War the walls and most of the castle were ordered destroyed. The Great Fire of 1675 then destroyed much of the town. Of 404 listed buildings nearby, 15 are Grade I, among them the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Church of All Saints.
