Borough Hill, on the eastern edge of Daventry, was occupied from prehistory, with Bronze Age barrows, Iron Age hillforts and a Roman villa. The name is more probably Anglo-Saxon, meaning Dafa's tree. The Domesday Book of 1086 lists the place as Daventrei, held by Countess Judith, a niece of William the Conqueror. A Cluniac priory was founded beside the parish church around 1108 and closed in 1526. A market was first recorded in 1203. In 1645 Charles I stayed at the Wheatsheaf Inn while his army camped on Borough Hill, shortly before the Battle of Naseby. The Church of the Holy Cross dates from 1758. The coaching trade slumped after the railway opened in 1838. Of 72 listed buildings, the church is Grade I, while the Moot Hall, Saracen's Head Inn and Wheatsheaf Hotel are Grade II*.
