A short history of Studley
Studley takes its name from Old English words for a meadow or pasture where horses were kept. The manor appears twice in the Domesday Book, mainly among the lands of William son of Courbucion, with a smaller holding under William Bonavallet. The larger entry records a mill, a salt house, woodland and a priest among its people. Peter Corbizun founded an Augustinian priory in the 12th century. It closed at the dissolution during Henry VIII's reign and its stone went into other buildings nearby. The making of needles and fishing tackle was first noted in 1695. James Pardow introduced steam to the making of needles in 1800 and started a factory on Mill Road. An inclosure act of 1817 applied to land within the parish. Twelve listed buildings stand near the centre and Mountbatten House and its attached garden walls is the highest graded at Grade II*.
Sport and leisure
Studley Leisure Centre and Entaco are both multi-sport sports centres. Laser Conflict Ltd at The Golf Centre is a laser tag sports centre. Padi is a sport venue for scuba diving. Pitches and courts include a number of bowls and soccer pitches along with tennis, basketball and skateboard facilities. For open space there is Pool Road Recreation Ground and Studley Common nature reserve. Children's playground facilities are also found in the area. Some of these facilities lie just outside the town centre.
