A short history of Bury St Edmunds
Archaeological work on the edge of Bury St Edmunds found evidence of Bronze Age activity and coins of Roman date from the first and second centuries. The town was a Saxon royal borough, originally called Beodericsworth, where a monastery was founded around 633. King Edmund, killed by the Danes in 869, was buried there in 924 and his shrine drew pilgrims. Around 1080 Abbot Baldwin laid the town out on a grid pattern. In 1190 the townspeople massacred 57 Jews and later that year the abbot gained permission to evict those who remained. English barons are thought to have gathered at the abbey church in 1214. The Great Riot of 1327 destroyed the abbey's main gate and a fortified one replaced it. A fire in 1608 destroyed 160 dwellings. The area has 735 listed buildings including 32 at Grade I such as the Theatre Royal and the Abbey Gate and Gatehouse.
