A short history of Warwick

People lived on the Warwick hilltop in the Neolithic period and a large Roman barn stood on the site of Warwick School in the 2nd century. The settlement has been inhabited continuously since the 5th century. Its Old English name, Wæringwīc, may refer to a clan, a fortification or a weir on the Avon. In 914 Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians, built a fortified burh there against the Vikings. The Danes burned much of the town in 1016. William the Conqueror founded Warwick Castle in 1068 and a priory followed around 1119. Warwick became a borough in 1545. In 1642 Royalist forces besieged the Parliamentary castle without success. The Great Fire of 5 September 1694 destroyed 460 buildings and the centre was rebuilt in the Georgian style, largely by Francis Smith and later William and David Hiorne.
