Flint tools show people were active nearby in prehistoric times and Roman remains include pottery, coins and roof tiles linked to villas north of the village. In the mid-12th century, during the conflict known as The Anarchy, King Stephen ordered a castle built at Burwell to help contain Geoffrey de Mandeville. Geoffrey attacked and was mortally wounded while it was still under construction, so it was left unfinished. On 8 September 1727 a fire in a barn during a puppet show killed 80 of the 140 people inside. The Burwell Chemical Works opened in the 1850s, bringing growing trade to the lode. Of 30 listed buildings, Stevens Mill is the highest graded at Grade II*.
