Remains of a neolithic temple dated to between 3685 and 3365 BCE lie on the edge of Godmanchester. The Romans later founded Durovigutum here at a meeting of several roads, with a mansio, but the settlement shrank at the end of the third century, probably after an attack by Anglo-Saxon raiders. The name joins an Anglo-Saxon personal name, Guðmund or Godmund, to a reference to the Roman fort. Domesday Book of 1086 records Godmundcestre in the hundred of Leightonstone. It lists 26 ploughlands with room for 31 more, 160 acres of meadow and 50 acres of woodland. It also lists a priest, a church and three water mills. King John granted a charter in 1212 and James I another in 1604. From July 1945 to January 1946 Farm Hall held German nuclear scientists. Tudor House is Grade II*, among 55 listed buildings near the centre.
