A short history of Ludlow

Roger de Lacy began building Ludlow Castle about 1075 and the settlement of Dinham grew up beside it. The Domesday Book of 1086 names neither Ludlow nor Dinham, placing the area in the manor of Stanton held by Walter de Lacy, while neighbouring Ludford, the Sheet and Steventon do appear. The name Lodelowe is recorded before 1138. In the 12th century the castle's lords laid out a planned town. St Laurence's Church was rebuilt in 1199 and 1200 and Ludlow was a separate parish by 1200. Town walls were built in the mid-13th century. From 1472 to 1689 the town was the base of the council for Wales and the border lands and Arthur Tudor died at the castle in 1502. Of 435 listed buildings near the centre nine are Grade I, among them the Guildhall, the Feathers Hotel and the Butter Cross.
