A short history of Coventry
The Romans used a fort at Baginton from around AD 60 until about 280. The town most likely began as a Saxon settlement and its name is widely thought to derive from a tree tied to Cofa, a Saxon landowner. St Osburga founded a nunnery around 700 which a Danish army ruined in 1016. Leofric, Earl of Mercia and Lady Godiva founded a Benedictine monastery in 1043 and a market grew at its gates. By 1066 the town had about 1,200 inhabitants. Cloth trade, notably Coventry blue, was important by the 13th century. Edward III granted a charter in 1345 and work on a city wall began around 1355. Parliament met there in 1404 and in 1451 it became a county. The wall was finished in 1530. A raid in November 1940 destroyed much of the old centre. Of 279 listed buildings nearby, 20 are Grade I including the Charterhouse and Swanswell Gate.
