A short history of Sawtry

Sawtry is said to take its name from its role as a trading centre for salt and in the Dark Ages it was divided into three parishes named All Saints, St Andrew and Judith. The Domesday Book of 1086 records the place as Saltrede, in the Hundred of Normancross in Huntingdonshire. The entry lists four manors and 56 households, with three churches and two priests there by that date. Judith of Lens, a niece of William the Conqueror, built her manor here. In 1147 her grandson Simon de Senlis founded the Cistercian Abbey of St Mary, which took 91 years to complete and served local people in both spiritual and practical ways. The abbey was pulled down in 1540 when the monasteries were closed under the English Reformation although some traces of it remain. Sawtry moat and shrunken medieval village is a scheduled monument and the centre has 10 listed buildings, all Grade II.
