Iron Age and Anglo-Saxon finds include the Desborough Mirror from the 1st century and the Desborough Necklace, both held by the British Museum. In 1086 Domesday Book gave Desborough the description of a place of judgement. The name is thought to derive from Disburg, a fortified place regarded as sacred. From the 17th century spinning and weaving shaped the town, its factories making cloth and linen from local wool and flax until the middle of the 19th century. Silk weaving then started at a factory on Paddock Lane while shoe-making also grew. The Town Cross, a pillar in the Market Square, is thought to have been a gateway pillar from Harrington Hall. Of ten listed buildings near the centre the Anglican and Methodist Church of St Giles is Grade I and nine are Grade II.
