A short history of Lutterworth
Lutterworth began as an Anglo-Saxon settlement. Its name may come from an Old English term for an enclosure on the River Hlūtre, probably an early name for the River Swift, with Hlūtre itself likely meaning clear or bright. The place appears in the Domesday Book of 1086. King John granted a market charter in 1214 and the town became a busy trading centre. Around 1318 the Irish statesman Robert le Poer served as parish priest. John Wycliffe was rector from 1374 to 1384 and is traditionally believed to have made the first English version of the Bible from the Latin during those years. Lutterworth Grammar School was founded in 1630. In the stagecoach era the town was a significant halt for travellers linking Leicester with Oxford and London. Former coaching inns and half-timbered buildings remain. In the late 1930s and the 1940s Sir Frank Whittle carried out early jet engine development at the British Thomson-Houston works.
