A short history of Ramsey

Ramsey takes its name from an Old English term meaning wild garlic island. It has no entry in the Domesday Book of 1086, perhaps because it was counted with Bury or because the abbey then held royal privileges. The town grew around Ramsey Abbey, a Benedictine monastery and stayed a small market town serving it. By 1200 it had a weekly market, with an annual fair added later. The Great Whyte was then a navigable canal. After the abbey's estates passed into lay hands in the later 16th century enclosure gathered pace. A fire destroyed about 15 tenements at Little Whyte in 1636 and drainage of the Great Level began that century. Another fire in 1731 destroyed much of the High Street. Common land was enclosed by Act of Parliament in 1801 and the Great Whyte was culverted by 1854. In 1941 the German spy Josef Jakobs parachuted near Dovehouse Farm. The centre has 52 listed buildings including three Grade I: the Gatehouse to Ramsey Abbey, Ramsey Abbey School and the Church of St Thomas à Becket.
