In 912 Æthelflæd raised a mound on the west bank during an offensive against them. Once the Normans had conquered England, the manor passed by grant of William I to Roger de Montgomerie. The town became a royal borough in 1102. Roger Mortimer attacked and burnt it in 1322. Cromwell later ordered the castle to be demolished.
